role:

Can label system design

professor:

Jamie McLennan

problem:

One beer series needed two seasonal moods without losing brand continuity.

result:

A two-label system: Summer “Sunny Flow” and Winter “Cool Ride” variants.

skills:

Illustration, visual hierarchy, color systems, typographic, packaging compliance, motion graphics.

Context

Whiprsnapr Brewing targets local Ottawa craft-beer drinkers (25–55) and positions itself as community-driven and approachable. The concept anchored the can series to Ottawa’s Rideau Canal, using its summer and winter identities to create a place-based seasonal product story.

Challenge

The design had to communicate two contrasting seasonal tones while staying readable on a curved can. It also required a consistent layout for mandatory information (ingredients, bilingual copy, ABV, barcode, address) without killing the hero illustration.

Approach

Built two color and type systems: warm, energetic summer vs cool, calm winter, each with distinct headline fonts and shared body text rules. The layouts follow a canal-shaped flow line, with simplified figures (paddling / skating) and Ottawa landmarks as subtle anchors.

Impact

Delivered two final, production-style label layouts (Summer Lemon Ale / Winter Apple Ale) with complete bilingual regulatory blocks and consistent brand placement. Produced realistic mockups for seasonal launch communication, showing the system working in digital and lifestyle contexts.
