objective:

Design a black-and-white two-page magazine spread using only type. Apply layout grids, hierarchy, alignment, and expressive title typography to create a visually engaging, readable composition that follows all typesetting rules.

Choose of Typeface

In 1st step, I tested 2 typeface combinations to explore tone and legibility. Option 1 uses Joschmi for headlines and pull quotes, paired with Myriad Pro for body and sub-headers — creating a bold, geometric contrast. Option 2 uses Pixelify Sans for headlines and pull quotes with Myriad Pro again as the supporting typeface, giving a digital, modern aesthetic. I formatted headings, quotes, and body text for each set and submitted them for professor review to assess clarity, visual tone, and appropriateness for the article’s audience.

Layout Grid

2nd step, I sketched multiple layout variations using a 6-column-grid system to explore text flow, title placement, and balance across the spread. Each version tested different approaches to headline scale, pull quote positioning, and body alignment. After reviewing all options, I selected the most effective layout based on hierarchy clarity, page rhythm, and readability.

Final Work

This is my final spread, completed in InDesign using a 6-column grid. I chose Pixelify for the headline and pull quote to visually reflect the digital theme of “The Magic of Typesetting eBooks.” The pixel-style typeface reinforces the content’s focus on digital formats, while Myriad Pro supports legibility for body text. I maintained clear hierarchy, balanced whitespace, and consistent alignment throughout. The pull quote adds contrast and rhythm, while the running footer and folios meet layout requirements — resulting in a cohesive, expressive, and readable editorial design.
