We created a 15–30 second kinetic typography animation in After Effects, combining type and motion. The open-topic format encouraged personal or cultural expression through animated text.

I picked the famous scene “I am your father” from The Empire Strikes Back. This moment is iconic to Star Wars fans and full of nostalgia. I have watched this scene many times, so I am very familiar with its pacing and dialogue. Once I got the assignment, I immediately knew I wanted to animate this scene.
I decided to use red and blue as the main colours to represent Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Red stands for danger and power, while blue symbolizes justice and resistance. I used solid black as the background to highlight the contrast. For typography, I sourced the official Jedi font to keep the Star Wars identity.
I transcribed the full dialogue from the “I am your father” scene and broke it down into individual lines. Each line was treated as a separate script for animation. Based on the storyboard, I planned how each line would enter, exit, and animate. Vader’s lines use heavy, ominous movements; Luke’s lines are faster, louder, and emotional.
After completing the storyboard, I imported all graphic assets into After Effects and animated the type frame by frame. The biggest challenge was syncing the kinetic typography to the original scene’s pacing and voice acting. I applied techniques like easy-ease, scaling, and camera zoom to enhance drama and evoke the original emotional beats.
